A 1935 Auburn 851SC Boattail Speedster led the way at an auction held in conjunction with the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance, selling for $462,000 as the event raked in a total of $5.4 million.
The Auburn was intricately restored and just the ninth version built. It was originally a show car at the Chicago auto salon. A 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Sport Phaeton, one of 36 copies built, went for $319,000. All prices include a 10 percent buyer's premium.
The event was staged by RM Auctions on Aug. 1 in suburban Detroit, and it was part of several days of car/lifestyle events surrounding the concours. Organizers said 102 cars were offered and 79 percent sold.
A 1936 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria notched a sale of $253,000, and a 1931 Chrysler Imperial Dual Cowl Phaeton sold for $225,000.
A 2005 Ford GT supercar sold for $187,000, with a portion of the money going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This was the sixth GT built. Another one will be up for sale at an RM auction on Aug. 15 at Monterey.
