In tune: Hyundai reveals second custom Genesis coupe
Another customized coupe from Hyundai is on the way to a SEMA showing in November.

The tuners at HKS are outfitting the two-door Genesis with a slew of performance parts, including a GT turbo upgrade that boosts horsepower and torque, adjustable suspension, turbo exhaust and a bolstered flow intake system.

HKS also will add functional ground effects and a number of electronics upgrades for the interior, including a feature that calculates fuel consumption and efficiency in real time. Outside, the car has a low-slung appearance, and it’s painted a dark shade of red.

HKS, a Japanese company with a base in Los Angeles, offers custom parts for a number of cars, including the Nissan 350Z and Mitsubishi Evolution.

This is the second tuner version of the Genesis, following the rally-inspired car outfitted by Rhys Millen Racing. That one has a prominent wing, silver-and-black livery and the look of a racer, in contrast with the look of the HKS outfit, which is more sinister street car.

Hyundai plans to make a strong showing at SEMA, displaying three coupes, two sedans and two additional sedans tricked out by DUB customizers, said John Krafcik, Hyundai’s vice president of product development and strategic planning.

Obviously, the Genesis is shaping up to be a car that tuners can’t wait to get their mitts on, as it is Hyundai’s first rear-wheel-drive sports car. Power will come from a 306-hp 3.8-liter V6 shared with the Genesis sedan, or a 212-hp turbo I4 engine.

“We’ve designed Genesis coupe from the start to be tuner friendly,” Krafcik said in a statement.

SEMA is Nov. 4-7 in Las Vegas.

The Genesis coupe is due in showrooms in the spring of next year, and follows the sedan, which launched this summer and is being aimed at a premium market.
