Honda Motor Co. is offering a new camera system that gives drivers a bird’s-eye view of the car to help with parking and visibility in blind corners and intersections.
Honda also has developed an airbag that reduces body impact.
The camera system uses four wide-angle cameras and will be available in the redesigned Odyssey minivan going on sale next month in Japan.
The technology is similar to that developed by Nissan Motor Co. but can be used to navigate tight quarters to the left and right as well as peek around corners at intersections.
A computer synthesizes images from the front and rear cameras to compile its aerial view.
Separately, Honda has developed a driver’s side airbag that deploys in controlled stages instead of one explosive burst. The idea is to increase the deployment speed and the amount of time the bag remains inflated while lessening body impact.
The new i-SRS airbag will debut in Japan in November in the Life small car. It uses a spiral-shaped seam and gas release valve to ensure speedy but controlled inflation.
It is unclear when either of these technologies might be introduced in the United States.
