Done with dinosaurs: GEM's new neighborhood electric vehicle leaves no footprint
Chrysler subsidiary Global Electric Motorcar has been making neighborhood electric vehicles for just 10 years. But what it lacks in experience, it makes up for in innovation.

The newest model, the Peapod, is a golf-cart-sized vehicle with all the features of a modern car. The Peapod has three-point safety belts, laminated automotive-safety glass, halogen headlights and mirrors.

Chrysler showed the Peapod earlier this week, along with three other electric-powered vehicles it is considering for production.

The GEM e2 and e4 models have an electric motor that produces 5 hp at cruising speeds, and up to 12 hp during hill climbs and hard acceleration. The bigger e6, eL and eL XD have a 7-hp motor that gets up to 15 hp at peak loads.

The cars will charge in six to eight hours on a normal 110-volt outlet and have a 30-mile range. The top speed is 25 mph.
