VW pulled the $85,000 Phaeton from the U.S. market in 2006 after four years of falling short of sales expectations.
The new Phaeton for the States will be a complete redesign, according to a report by Bloomberg.
“We have our eyes firmly set on the U.S. market,” Juergen Borrmann, director of VW's plant in Dresden, Germany, told Bloomberg in an interview.
A Volkswagen of America spokesman said a final decision has yet to be made on bringing the Phaeton back to the United States.
VW sold 4,500 Phaetons in 2009.
A redesigned Phaeton is being launched this year for European markets and China. Changes include new front and rear fascia and a redesigned interior.
The Phaeton shares its platform with the Bentley Continental GT and the Flying Spur. The Dresden plant performs the final assembly, but the Phaeton bodies are built and painted at a VW plant in Zwickau, Germany, about 60 miles from Dresden.
