BMW to enter DTM series in 2012 with six M3 touring cars
As CarAdvice previously reported, BMW hasn’t entered into the German touring car championship since 1994, and although a factory team won’t be entering into next year’s series alone, the efforts will be highly welcomed by BMW fans.

BMW Motorsport already has a close relationship with BMW Team Schnitzer and Team RBM, teams that have both competed in various motorsports fields with backing from BMW Motorsport in the past. BMW Team Schnitzer and BMW Motorsport also won the famous Nurburgring 24 Hour event numerous times together, including winning last year’s 2010 event.

Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director, said in a recent report,

“In recent months we have worked very intensely on the DTM project. The concepts presented by BMW Team RBM, BMW Team Schnitzer and Reinhold Motorsport GmbH ultimately convinced us. This is an excellent team line-up for BMW. We are looking forward to cooperating over the coming years – and hope to enjoy great success together.”

The six DTM M3s will be unveiled sometime prior to the 2012 season and are expected to look something like the rendered image at the top of this report. BMW Team Schnitzer will also compete in some European and Asian endurance events this year with a 2011 BMW M3 GT car.
