Showcasing an independent design philosophy created by MG parent company, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), the new hatch shape features futuristic body contours, headlights and trimming, and will be used as inspiration for an expected production version that will rival the popular Volkswagen Golf.
Like the MG 6 reported earlier today, the MG5 Concept will be based on a Chinese model called the Roewe 350. Although specific details are yet to be announced, reports say the MG5 will eventually be powered by the same powertrains as seen in the Roewe 350 donor car. This means it’ll feature a range of 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engines.
According to a report by China Car Times, a sports model might also join the production line-up at some point, offering a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Power is said to be around the 120kW mark.
It’s all a bit sketchy at this stage as a definite production model is still yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you updated. Look out for our Shanghai unveiling report on April 19.
