Mazda's futuristic idea of an electric race car, called the Kaan, won the design challenge this week at the Los Angeles auto show, besting teams from eight other automakers.
The Kaan would compete in an electric motorsports league sometime around 2025. It has one wheel up front and two in the back, giving off the appearance of a rolling fighter jet. It won for its blend of innovation and technology.
The Kaan would employ Mazda's electronic tire system and be capable of a top speed of 250 mph with no emissions. Mazda's North American design team led by Jacques Flynn and Carlos Salaff created the idea.
The cars would be part of a team sport, where 30 cars drive as a group, similar to cycling.
The design competition was made up of two-dimensional renderings and concept descriptions from many of a field of heavy hitters, including General Motors, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The idea was to explore future elements of competition in motorsports.
