Mazda 3 hatch to bow in Italy
Mazda will use next week’s auto show in Bologna, Italy, to roll out the hatchback version of the new Mazda 3.

This move is partially because Europeans have traditionally been more receptive to hatchbacks than American customers--which is why we saw the Mazda 3 sedan last week in Los Angeles.

The hatch gets the new 2.5-liter engine that makes 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque. A 2.0-liter unit also will be available.

Even though it bows in Europe, we will get the new Mazda hatch on our shores--it’s the base to create one of our favorite daily drivers, the Mazdaspeed 3.

But we might not get the 2.2-liter turbodiesel that is bound for European markets, where governments are cracking down hard on carbon-dioxide emissions and taxes make gasoline more expensive than diesel fuel.

Look for the new Mazda 3 sedan and hatch to make their way into showrooms next spring.
