GM could keep making parts for Hummer after possible sale
General Motors could end up making Hummer parts and subassemblies for another carmaker as part of a sell-off deal, GM product czar Bob Lutz said at the London motor show.

“How it’ll work with the factories still has to be sorted,” Lutz said.

It could be similar to how Honda unraveled its cooperation deal with Rover after BMW bought the British company in 1992. Honda continued to supply chassis, body parts and powertrains to the BMW-owned company for several years after the deal.

Lutz wouldn’t comment on whether GM has received any interest in the Hummer brand.

Meanwhile, he also addressed the current fuel crisis and said it’s worse than those that rocked the car industry in 1974 and 1979.

“We have a fuel shock overlaid on a really weak economic situation with the subprime crisis and people feeling a lot poorer now,” Lutz said.
